Important Information regarding the notary seal in Montana:
Notaries holding current commission on October 1, 2009, may continue to use any embosser that has been serving as an official seal, but only until commission expiration; and likewise, notaries holding current commissions on that date may continue to use any stamp and seal design, but only until commission expiration. Starting October 1, 2013, no embossers nor Notary seal and stamp designs at variance with the Secretary’s prescription will be permitted.

- Be a resident of Montana for a least 30 days preceding appointment (effective July 1, 2010)
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not be a convicted felon
- Not have had a notary commission revoked in Montana or any other state
